Compare the2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6VS 2022 Toyota Mirai

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Ioniq 6 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Mirai doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Ioniq 6 has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Mirai doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Ioniq 6 has standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, systems which detect vehicles approaching from the sides and can automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision. Parking Support Brake costs extra on the Mirai.

Both the Ioniq 6 and the Mirai have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Ioniq 6 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Mirai’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Ioniq 6 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Mirai. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Mirai ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Ioniq 6’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Mirai’s (7 vs. 5 years).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai above average in initial quality. With 6 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 10 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked fifth.

The Ioniq 6 Long Range’s optional electric motor produces 43 more horsepower (225 vs. 182) than the Mirai’s electric motor. The Ioniq 6’s optional electric motors produces 138 more horsepower (320 vs. 182) and 146 lbs.-ft. more torque (446 vs. 300) than the Mirai’s electric motor.

On the EPA test cycle the Ioniq 6 gets better mileage than the Mirai:

The Ioniq 6 Long Range SE RWD can travel longer on a full charge than the Mirai Limited on a full tank of hydrogen (361 miles vs. 357 miles).

The Ioniq 6 SEL/Limited’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Mirai Limited’s optional 45 series tires.

The Ioniq 6 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Mirai doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ioniq 6’s wheelbase is 1.2 inches longer than on the Mirai (116.1 inches vs. 114.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Ioniq 6 is 1 inch wider in the front and 1.5 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Mirai.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 300 pounds less than the Toyota Mirai.

The Ioniq 6 is 4.7 inches shorter than the Mirai, making the Ioniq 6 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 amounts to more than styling. The Ioniq 6 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .22 Cd. That is significantly lower than the Mirai (.29) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Ioniq 6 get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the Ioniq 6 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Mirai doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Ioniq 6 has 1.8 inches more front headroom, 3.2 inches more front legroom, .2 inches more rear headroom, 1.6 inches more rear legroom and 2.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the Mirai.

The Ioniq 6 has a much larger trunk than the Mirai (11.7 vs. 9.6 cubic feet).

The Ioniq 6’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Mirai doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Ioniq 6’s power trunk can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Ioniq 6’s power trunk can also be opened or closed by pressing a button. The Mirai doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

The Ioniq 6 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Mirai doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

On extremely cold winter days, the Ioniq 6 Limited’s standard heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Mirai doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The Ioniq 6 Limited has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the rear seat, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Mirai doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Ioniq 6 Limited’s Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Mirai Limited’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.

The Ioniq 6 was chosen as Car and Driver’s “EV of the Year” for 2023. The Mirai has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.

The Hyundai Ioniq outsold the Toyota Mirai by almost 13 to one during 2022.
